Actor Charlie St. Cyr has landed a role in the highly anticipated film Magellan, directed by internationally acclaimed Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz. The film stars Gael García Bernal as the iconic Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, with Charlie portraying one of the soldiers during the Philippine leg of the expedition.
“We shot 10 days in September and 16 days in December down in Quezon Province, Philippines,” says Charlie. “For those who don’t know, this is still rainy season in the Philippines, so most days we were wet — haha! But working alongside Portuguese, Filipino, and Mexican actors like Gael and his brother Dario Yazbek Bernal was a great experience. It was really cool how diverse the cast and crew were. And both brothers are super down-to-earth despite being big names.”

Although Charlie has previously worked on Filipino-themed films in the U.S., Magellan marks his first locally filmed movie in the Philippines.
“I’ve got to give a shoutout to Director Chris Soriano,” Charlie adds. “He was the first director I worked with with in the U.S., who casted me in my first Filipino film called The Wedding Hustler. The film premiered in both U.S. and Philippine cinemas in February 2023. From playing a limo driver-turned-stripper in The Wedding Hustler to stepping into the role of a European soldier in Megallen, I’m truly grateful to both directors for trusting me with these opportunities. I’m excited for what’s ahead and look forward to exploring more roles within the Filipino entertainment industry.”
