Q: Where are you originally from and where are you based now?

Carlos Coelho Costa  – A: I’m originally from Portugal, a country rich in history, culture, and storytelling traditions that have deeply influenced my creative outlook. I’m currently based in Senhora da Hora, a vibrant part of the Porto metropolitan area. This region, with its unique blend of urban energy and cultural heritage, offers a dynamic environment that continues to inspire my work as a filmmaker and creative professional. It’s a place where I can stay connected to both the local artistic scene and the international film community.

Q: Rising in the industry, what motivates and inspires you to be the best at your profession?

Carlos Coelho Costa  – A: What motivates me most is the transformative power of cinema, the way it can challenge perspectives, evoke deep emotion, and build bridges between cultures. As a filmmaker and producer, I see storytelling not just as entertainment, but as a tool for social, emotional, and intellectual dialogue. Each project is an opportunity to craft narratives that resonate with audiences globally, provoke thought, and sometimes even inspire change.

My inspiration also stems from a continuous desire to evolve artistically and technically. I strive to push boundaries, explore new formats, and experiment with unconventional approaches to narrative and visual language. Collaborating with diverse talents and participating in film festivals and international juries has given me a global lens, which keeps my creative perspective fresh and forward-thinking.

Ultimately, it’s the audience, their reactions, interpretations, and reflections, that fuels my drive to keep creating meaningful and impactful cinema. Knowing that a film can leave a lasting impression or spark a conversation is one of the most rewarding aspects of this profession.

Q: Do you have a favorite genre of films to direct? (Drama, Comedy, Action, Thriller, a little bit of all)?

Carlos Coelho Costa  – A: Drama is certainly the genre that speaks to me the most. I’m deeply drawn to its emotional depth and the opportunity it provides to explore the complexities of human nature, relationships, and personal transformation. Through drama, I’m able to craft narratives that resonate on a profound emotional level, often inspired by real-life experiences and social themes.

That said, I have a genuine appreciation for all genres. Each offers a unique language and set of challenges that stimulate creativity in different ways. Whether it’s the rhythm and timing of comedy, the intensity and choreography of action, or the psychological intricacies of thrillers, I enjoy stepping into different storytelling worlds and adapting my visual and narrative approach to fit the tone and purpose of each project.

Ultimately, I believe in the power of versatility. Exploring multiple genres not only broadens my creative range but also keeps my work dynamic and relevant to a wide variety of audiences.

Q: Can you share with us something people may not know about you? Any hobbies or other talents you have and/or like to do in your spare time?

Carlos Coelho Costa  – A: Outside of my work in cinema and audiovisual production, music has always been a central part of my creative life. I play the keyboards, and I’m currently working on my first solo music album, an exciting project that allows me to express myself through sound in a more personal and introspective way. Music, much like film, has the power to evoke emotion and atmosphere, and it’s a natural extension of my storytelling approach.

In my spare time, I’m also passionate about traveling. I find great inspiration in discovering new cultures, landscapes, and perspectives. Each journey offers fresh insights that often feed into my creative process, whether through visual influences, human stories, or cultural nuances.

And of course, I love watching cinema, not just as a professional obligation, but as a true cinephile. I make a point of exploring a wide range of international films and genres. It keeps me connected to the global cinematic landscape and continually inspires me to innovate and evolve in my own work.

Q: What are some projects that you’ve just wrapped up recently or that you’re currently working on?

Carlos Coelho Costa  – A: I’m currently involved in several projects, each at different stages of development and production. Due to confidentiality agreements, I’m unable to disclose full details about some of them just yet, but I can share that they span both international collaborations and original productions that continue to challenge and expand my creative boundaries.

One of the most significant projects I’m directing at the moment is All Rise, an American feature film. It’s a production that allows me to blend my European storytelling sensibilities with a broader, international cinematic language.

Simultaneously, I’m working on an ambitious television series titled Civilization of Fear. It’s a project that resonates strongly with current global tensions and anxieties, and it’s been both intellectually and creatively demanding in the most fulfilling way.

These works, alongside others in development, reflect my commitment to producing cinema and television that are not only artistically strong but also meaningful and thought-provoking for audiences around the world.
