Kendra Erika is a vibrant singer, songwriter, and actress whose journey from Boca Raton, Florida, to Los Angeles and the vibrant nightlife of Las Vegas has been nothing short of remarkable. Currently residing in Los Angeles, Kendra has become a familiar face at iconic venues, including her regular performances at SUR Restaurant & Lounge on Tuesday nights, where she captivates audiences with her dynamic voice and engaging presence.
With five Billboard Top Ten dance hits to her credit, she has solidified her position as a powerhouse in the industry. However, her defining moment came in 2019 when her single “Self-Control” soared to the top of the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. This contemporary take on Laura Branigan’s classic 1984 hit was a collaboration with Grammy Award-winning producers Damon Sharpe and Eric Sanicola. The track not only reclaimed the spotlight but also introduced Kendra’s artistry to a new generation, earning her a coveted spot on the chart’s Year-End Top 30.
Kendra’s ability to navigate different genres showcases her versatility as an artist. Following the success of “Self-Control,” she ventured beyond the dance-pop realm to deliver a heartfelt rendition of Frank Sinatra’s iconic “Witchcraft.” We had a chance to do an exclusive interview with Kendra, read below our exclusive Q & A to find out the latest!
Q: When was the moment you realized that you wanted to be a singer?
Kendra – A: At a very early age. I was brought up with a lot of the Disney movies, and they had a really big influence on me at a young age. I wanted to create that or emulate that and out for myself. So I think that’s what got me into performance—because of being exposed to that at such a young age.
Q: What is your favorite part about performing live?
Kendra – A: Connecting with people, being able to enhance their emotional state and their mental state while doing so. And I’m blessed that I’m in a position to do that on a benevolent level.
Q: Did you have any top fav musical icons growing up, and do you also draw from them when you’re performing?
Kendra – A: I think whenever one is performing, the inspirations that they’ve pulled from throughout their career or their journey do really come out of them.
Some of my musical inspirations are Frank Sinatra, Andrea Bocelli. I was classically trained, so Andrea Bocelli has a special place in my heart. Also Kylie Minogue, Ellie Goulding, and also Cher.
Q: What is one of the most personal songs you’ve released?
Kendra – A: I think Avalanche is the one that truly hallmarks my journey artistically.
Q: What else do you enjoy aside from singing?
Kendra – A: I also play golf! I was on the varsity high school team. I also love hiking. I enjoy just doing any thing activities involving nature and outdoors.
Q: Can you share with us your latest projects?
Kendra – A: I have a song that has been released on Friday the 13th, called Body Language. This song was released through my independent label as well as Sony and AMG. I also still maintain my independence, which is so important these days. And aside from that, I have a couple film projects in the works, and I have a jazz album that I’m working on currently, and can’t reveal too much about it.
