Q: Where are you originally from and where are you based now?
Patricia Mizen – A: My father was in the Special Forces and he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan where he met my mom, who worked at the local base on the island. Sparks hit and boom! I was born. Therefore, I am originally from Okinawa but raised from the age of 2 in Fayetteville, NC. Because I was a military brat, I had the opportunity to live all around the world. Now, I live in Los Angeles, California.
Q: Patricia, you are an award winning, talented and experienced actress being trained by Hollywood’s A listers including Jennifer Aniston, Emily Rose, Whitney Cummings and many more! What do you love most about acting ( auditions, preparation, performing, final premier, all of it) and what would you say really motivates you and inspires you to be the best at your profession?
Patricia Mizen – A: After coming back to LA from the East Coast in 2015, I knew that I needed to get into class right away. To me, training and honing your craft is vital in sustaining longevity. I love learning different techniques for they are the gold nuggets on your tool belt, so to speak. So, I applied to UCLA’s Professional Program, Acting for the Camera. I was ecstatic and grateful to find out that they liked my audition and I was officially selected into the program. The program gave students the opportunity to learn from actual working actors such as Andrea Bendewald, Emily Rose, Judith Moreland, Scott Alan Smith, Troy Ruptash and Alicia Coppola. They were amazing in giving their insight about the business, lessons learned and how to juggle the ups and downs. The guest speakers were the icing on the cake. Jennifer Aniston, Whitney Cummings, Jeffrey Reiner, Wendell Pierce, Grace Wu (head of casting NBC), to name a few; opened our hearts and minds on topics such as persistence, dedication, hard work, relationships. I will always treasure that year of learning and still today, I continue to nurture the friendships that I’ve made within the class.
What do I love most about acting? I love the fact that I can create a soul from a scene or script and give life through my emotions, thoughts, wants and needs. Acting is life. Also, I love the fact that through storytelling, one can feel and sometimes see themselves in the characters that they are watching. To be a part of being able to stimulate someone’s emotions and to make them feel love, pain, happiness, joy, fulfills my need to please. I love the whole process in storytelling. I respect what the writers have to say, therefore; I do not change the words, I love the collaboration between the director and actor, therefore, I follow directions openly.
I love the premiers, red carpet etc. as well. That is the time to reunite with everyone who worked so hard together and to celebrate the story and job well done.
What motivates me and inspires me to be the best in my profession? My passion, love and drive for storytelling, acting, all of it, is what motivates me. If I didn’t love it or even had the passion for acting or this business, I would be doing something totally different that would fulfill me entirely. The thing that inspires me to be the best in my profession, I would say, is truth. Telling the truth and being totally honest in how I am feeling as that character. In real life, we have fears of “hurting someone’s feelings” or “conforming to the norm”. I love being able to express myself, to be totally truthful in my acting and I love bringing stories, characters to life for others. And in order for me to be the best in my profession, I will continue to develop honest, truthful and believable work. And to execute that I will continue to train and hon my craft. Also, taking in the treasure of what life gives us on a daily basis contributes to being the best in this profession.
Q: Do you have a top fav 3 selection of people in the industry ( filmmakers, producers, directors, actors ) you admire and that you want to work with with in the future ?
Patricia Mizen – A: would love to work with producer Tyler Perry, director Jodie Foster and actress Sarah Paulson.
Q: Specially for film, what kind of roles do you usually go for and do you most want to expand upon( drama, comedy, crime, a little bit of all)?
Patricia Mizen – A: Thank you. I absolutely love roles like: an assassin, a sci-fi super hero, FBI agent, the victim roles, all of which, I have had the privilege of bringing to life. I will never get tired of those types of roles. I would; however, like to expand on the comedy side. Multi Cam or Single Cam would be so much fun. All and all, I am not picky and I appreciate every audition and role any casting director would see me fit for.
Do you have any new or recently finished projects you can share with us?
Patricia Mizen – A: I do. There are a couple of feature films that will come out in 2021. Boy Makes Girl, a great feature written by Mark Elias. And The Little Things, starring Denzel Washington, in which I have an appearance. Also, the second season of the award winning series, Judgment Call, written by Lisa Temple will be filmed in 2021. In addition, I just finished writing a feature and with a close friend, we wrote a pilot. Both will be pitched in 2021. And last but not least, the award winning virtual short film that I booked over quarantine in July called, Glitch, written and directed by Sara Caldwell, is circulating in film festivals and is doing very well. I am very humble to be part of what’s to come ahead.
Q: Can you tell us something we may not know about you? Any hobbies, passions or other secret talents you have and or like to do in your spare time ?
Patricia Mizen – A: Something you may not know about me is that I am a survivor of Covid 19. I contracted the virus in May and was sick for five weeks and finally tested negative on June 9th. I was alone in a studio apartment in NY because I was actually moving my great aunt out of her apartment to move to California. She contracted it when the virus first hit NY. Not knowing that she was still positive, her syptoms revealed themselves and then I contracted it from her. She is 84 and also a survivor! I think back and I learned so many valuable lessons when I was sick. One thing that stands out in my mind is that one can never take life for granted and to be truly grateful for what you have. Life is short and also, even when we have the lowest of all luck, know that the universe is alway working to help you and is in your favor teaching us lessons to learn and grow.
In my spare time, I absolutely love to take hikes. I love reading and writing, cooking and I love to watch great actors on TV. I spend a lot of time outdoors with nature; it’s my peace of mind actually. Most importantly, I love spending time with my husband, daughter and my two dogs.
