Sarah Carson is an American actress primarily known for her roles in Bird of Paradise (2023), The Deceased Won’t Desist! (2021), and White Men Can’t Jump (2023). Q: Where are you originally from and where are you located now on the map?
Sarah Carson- A: I was born in Birmingham, Alabama on the same day and in the same hospital as Mickey Rooney’s son. My parents, though, moved to a farm in Iowa when my father got out of the air force. I was four when we moved, so most of my growing up years were in Iowa. I owned that farm until 2019. I hated to sell it, but I knew none of my heirs would want to deal with it, so I let it go. I came to Los Angeles in 1983 to take a position as Senior Vice President at a major bank. I am one of the first women to get an MBA from the Harvard Business School and I’ve been in Los Angeles ever since.
Q: What motivates and inspires you to be the best at your profession and what do you love most about film?
Sarah Carson- A: I would say that my mother was the biggest influence to do my best. I remember she enrolled me in a book club called “Great Women in History,” and those books were a big influence on me. I’m from a very competitive family. Most of my family’s achievers are in the field of sports. I’m also remotely related to the late Johnny Carson.
I looked at “film” first as a healing activity. Being one of the first women to graduate from the Harvard Business School made me one of the first female executives in corporate America. Back when I started out, the challenge was not equal pay for equal work but to overcome the perception that women were too emotional to make decisions. As a result, I had to be the last person to cry when things were going wrong. That let to me being pretty closed off. However, as I immersed myself in acting, I realized that I loved doing it. So the habit of doing my best whatever I’m doing kicked in.
Q: What would you say is your fav genre in roles you play: Drama, Comedy, Crime, Action or a little bit of all?
Sarah Carson- A: I love mysteries which are the genre of cop or legal shows. I’m a private investigator and a certified fraud examiner, and I so love the solving of cases in real life as I do that it’s little wonder I love shows in that genre. What I get a lot of at my age is roles where the character is demented and dying. I’m actually very happy when I get to audition for a role where I’m not on my deathbed.
Q: Can you share with us something people may not know about you?
Sarah Carson- A: There are quite a few things that might surprise people. The remote relationship with Johnny Carson, being one of the first women to get an MBA from the Harvard Business School, being a private investigator, teaching “How to tell If people are lying and open source investigating” at Cal State LA, I love animals having grown up on a farm and support several charities involved with finding homes for animals or preventing cruel experiments. I’ve meditated morning and evening for close to 50 years and never missed once save for the one time I had an operation and the anesthesia didn’t wear off.
Q: What are some projects that you’ve just wrapped up recently?
Sarah Carson- A: Because of the writers and actors’ strike of last year, it’s a little bare in the recent projects area. I have been asked to develop a series based loosely on my life. That was a surprise, but I’m taking it as the universe is telling me something.
