RISING STAR TALENT EXCLUSIVE: GET TO KNOW ACTOR CANAAN DEWEY!

Canaan Dewey is an (SAG-AFTRA) actor and designer. He is known for his award-winning role in the short film ‘Last Tonight’ and many more! Canaan is rising in the entertainment biz, read below our exclusive Q & A with Actor Canaan Dewey!

Q: Where are you originally from and where are you located now on the map?

Canaan Dewey – A: I’m a Jersey boy, I’m originally from East Orange, New Jersey but I now reside in Los Angeles, California and honestly, I feel like I’ve been destined to live here. The whole Southern California lifestyle really fits my vibe.

Q: Canaan, as an award-winning actor and entrepreneur what would you say motivates you and inspires you to be the best at your profession and do you have a top 3 favorite actors, filmmakers or directors that you want to work with in the business?

Canaan Dewey – A:Well, what motivates me is the joy of being creative and expressing myself. whether it’s how I dress, how I act, or how I design something, I want to be known as someone who has created a lane of his own. I’ve always felt that I was different from most people around me, so I’ve always followed my own path throughout life. I started off professionally in high-end fashion retail but that felt like a limiting world for me and I also felt rather boxed-in working in retail and hospitality. I mean, it definitely is a part of the job for the employee to fit the brands culture. Anyway, I enjoy living an artistic life and being around people that enjoy making things and expressing their individual tastes. One of my favorite forms of expression is films and while I’m not a filmmaker yet I enjoy acting in these created worlds. These productions can become an influence on the conversations we have every day and I love seeing great movies and shows like everyone else but I desire to be a part of that everlasting magic as an actor. It would be very cool to work with major visionaries like Jordan Peele, Chloé Zhao and/or The Coen Brothers but there are so many great filmmakers and artists that it would be an honor to work with. We’ll see where my path leads and who becomes a part of my journey.

Q,: What is your fav genre in roles you play( Drama, Comedy,Action, a little bit of all) ?

Canaan Dewey – A: I really enjoy watching action, adventure and science fiction films and would love the opportunity to act in one or many. I’ve taken fight choreography and firearm lessons and even some wire work in hopes that one day I can be able to utilize some of these skills for a feature film or show. My wildest dream is to be in a Mission Impossible or Indiana Jones type of film or even a production that’ll allow me to to get trained more in horseback riding would be great (here’s looking at you “Yellowstone”). I did horseback riding many, many years ago and would love to pick that back up as an additional skill. I also hear that I’m naturally funny and I tend to have a darker, sassier sense of humor, so dramedies and satire films would mesh well with my archetype.

Q: Can you share with us something people may not know about you? Any hobbies or other secret talents you have and or like to do in your spare time?

Canaan Dewey – A: I really enjoy graphic design and working on my eCommerce Stores on the side; they’re complicated and fun to create. I took a lot of art electives throughout my schooling life and feel that they’ve come in handy when designing and building my stores. Besides being dramatic, I’ve always had a knack for graphic design and art which has led me to create ‘CANAANWEAR’. My artistic expression has materialized into a vibrant and edgy sportswear brand, that I’m very proud of.

I also co-host a podcast about love, dating, and relationships called “Date Smarter. Sexier” with professional matchmaker Andrea LaRosa. Many of my side projects can be seen on my main website canaandewey.com. As far as a random skill or hobby, I’ve become quite good at archery and oddly, I’ve built up quite a collection of kilts. I post a lot of my kilted looks on an Instagram page called @thekiltednegro. I tend to be attracted to rebellious styles and artistic expressions.

Q: What are some projects that you’ve just wrapped up recently or that you’re currently working on now?

Canaan Dewey – A: Since I just mentioned rebellious styles, I’m proud to be able to say that I had the opportunity to model for photographer Chris Anthony’s recently released art book “THANKS, WE’LL TAKE IT FROM HERE”, a photo book about income/wealth inequality and inspired by past revolutions. I highly recommend you check his book out. I recently wrapped a supporting role for the short film “The 4th Branch”, written and directed by E. Hughes Martinez and I’ve been developing my improv skills at Upright Citizens Brigade here in Los Angeles. I was hesitant to do improv at first but I’ve had a lot of fun performing on stage; it’s been years since my off-off broadway days and it’s a nice reminder of how much I love being on stage in front of a live audience. I enjoy acting when I get the opportunity to and I’m open to acting where I’m wanted but right now, my goal is to work more and more as a full-time working union actor.
