Q: Where are you originally from and where are you located now on the map?
Tyra Monique – A: I’m originally from the East Bay Area, CA. Specifically I was born in Hayward, CA and lived in Newark, CA growing up- which are adjacent to each other. However, I grew up all over Alameda County so it’s all home to me. I currently reside in Los Angeles, CA but travel back and forth to work in the San Francisco market as well.
Q: Tyra, as a rising star actress what would you say motivates you and inspires you to be the best at your profession and do you have a top 3 favorite actors, filmmakers or directors that you want to work with in the business?
- Tyra Monique – A: I would say what motivates/inspires me is a variety of things- I always told my parents from when I was little that I wanted to act and sing, they have put me through years of acting training which I am very thankful for. So my parents definitely motivate me. Also my twin brother who helps me film a lot of my self tapes-he’s probably the number one motivational person in my life. We grew up together and he’s the only one that has fully supported me and comprehends all the many challenges as an actor. He has seen my journey since I was a kid to now-to all the many No’s to when I finally reach a yes, it’s like all the hard work I put in suddenly seems validated.
- I would say I admire Zendaya and would want to work with her. She’s around my age, is an Emmy award winner and is very talented. When I first saw her on Disney Channel, it gave me hope that one day I could accomplish my dreams as well. Especially since she’s also from the Bay, and at the time of her uprising I hadn’t seen anyone from where I was from, and around my age make it to that level of stardom.
- As far as directors I loved working with Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck- definitely in my top caliber, I would also love to work with Tasha Smith. Tv shows tend to have numerous directors, so I’ll name some shows that I would love to work on (BMF, P-Valley, Euphoria, Blindspotting..etc) I would absolutely love to be a part of an A24 film and a HBO series also!
Q,: What is your fav genre in roles you play( Drama, Comedy,Action, a little bit of all) ?
Tyra Monique – A: Definitely Drama. I’ve always liked intense climatic shows/movies! I do like Comedy as well, and apparently a lot of people think I’m funny. Comedy however is a lot harder than Drama, in the sense that it’s all about timing and you have to know where all the setups and punchlines are in the script and hit it acutely. Comedy is a lot faster paced and exaggerated, given the opportunity though I would definitely do it.
Q: Can you share with us something people may not know about you? Any hobbies or other secret talents you have and or like to do in your spare time?
Tyra Monique – A: People may not know that my acting survival job is being a Substitute teacher. I started substituting as a way to have a flexible day job for acting. I also love all things beauty- Makeup/Hair and worked in that industry for six years. Lastly, I enjoy food and sleep very much!
